Maidstone United 3 - 4 Herne Bay

At no point after the first whistle was there anything other than an absolute certainty that Bay would take the points. Even when Maidstone managed somehow to equalise at 3-3 it was just a matter ot time, such was the calm determination emanating from the new league champions.
Ben Brown was deployed wide on the right flank and was faced with a side playing the offside trap and, to be fair, playing it well. But the big danger of these tactics is that on the odd occasion it will be found wanting. So it was then that running on to an inch perfect pass from Jason Shepherd, Ben found himself with just the keeper to beat. No contest. 1-0.
His next goal came after some extensive pressure on the Maidstone goal resulted in a corner. After his first, quickly taken cross was ordered to be retaken (the ref was having a natter with his lino) Ben curled an inswinger which took both the keeper and his defender inside the near post by surprise and the ball went in off the keeper's flailing arms. 2-0.
Maidstone pulled a goal back after a rare forage upfield took Bay's defence by surprise. The ball lobbed into the net over the advancing Shaun Smith. 2-1.
Just before half time and the action became a bit of a blur for your reporter but the result was a penalty. With Ben on a hat-trick there was no doubt who would place the ball on the spot and his resulting blaster, low and to the keepers right, beat a valiant effort to save. 3-1 and half time.
The second half brought an increase in the referee's writing activity. Having weilded the book several times in the first half it seemed as if a guiness book of records attempt was on the cards as he started booking anyone within booking distance because they looked bookable. Meanwhile back at the football Maidstone pulled level with two very isolated lunges forward and two well taken goals.
It was then that an eerie calm seemed to settle and even the manic ministrations of the booking machine were just a momentary interuption to Bay's move towards the inevitable.
Dan Smith, having taken up good front positions throughout the game, got the ball passed to him. His cross-goal pass to Rob Lawrence was intercepted by a keen Stones No.8. Unfortunately for him it rebounded into his own net. 4-3.
The score stayed the same despite more and more pressure from Bay's smoothe attacking front line.

There were a couple of ugly incidents, due mostly to the immature testosterone induced posturing of this mostly silly maidstone side. They were intent on a physical confrontation but lacked the sophistication to pull it off. In the end they were just very thuggish and quite unattractive (and ineffectual).

Team: Shaun Smith; Richie Martin; Jason Shepherd; Ross Brown; Neil Perkins; Joe Evans; Robert Joyce; Sam Kettle; Dan Smith; Ben Greenstreet; Ben Brown; Rob Lawrence.

Herne Bay 2 - 1 Canterbury City

Bay still needed 4 points from two games assuming that Canterbury City gained maximum points from all of their remaining games. A win against title rivals Canterbury City would be enough to take the title.
More than 150 people watched Bay totally dominate the first half with their quick passing. They won every 50/50 ball, however, Bay didn't create that many chances until five minutes from half-time. Bay broke quickly through Ben Brown who played Ritchie Martin in on the right wing to cross for Rob Lawrence to finish. What a half of football the crowd had witnessed.
Second half Canterbury City came out more determined and started putting pressure on the Bay defence, but City were having the same problem as Bay had in the first-half, they were unable to create goal scoring opportunities.
Bay, determined as ever, made countless chances but were unable to finish them off. With 20 minutes to go the game became very stretched and both teams were getting chances.
With 10 minutes to go Aaron Campbell, the City centre forward, hit a shot from 25 yards which flew into the top corner leaving Bay keeper Shaun Smith totally beaten.
From then on it looked as if it was might be a draw and the season would run into the last weekend, but Bay, driven on by the trio of Ben Brown, Neil Perkins and Dan Smith, weren't happy with the draw.
Ben first put Joe Evans away but he was unable to connect properly with the ball. A couple of long range efforts one from Robert Joyce and the other from Ben Brown followed but both were well saved.
With four minutes to go Joe Evans was through down the righ. He hit his shot across the goalkeeper and it was goal bound but Dan Smith made certain when he smashed it in from 4 yards.
Bay even managed to make another chance when Joe crossed for Robert Joyce to head wide. The final whistle came and with it the title. This was Herne Bay Youth first title at Kent Youth League level. Congratulations go to all the Boys that played this season.
I must say a big thank you to the supporters that came down and supported the Boys.

Herne Bay 0 - 1 Whitstable Town

Report by an independant observer

Herne Bay didn't start playing when the referee blew the whistle for the start of play. Indeed some of them appeared to be still tucked up in bed as Whitstable showed all of the initiative. They were faster to the ball and more determined in posession.
That said it was Bay who came closest to opening the scoring with Ben Brown, Rob Lawrence and Ben Greenstreet all having reasonable efforts go just wide or just over.
Whitstable it was, though, who took what turned out to be the winning goal. Indecision in defence left Smith in goal and two Bay defenders looking at the ball while the Whitstable forward hit it sweetly into the net.
In the second half Mr Hyde took over refereeing from Dr Jekyll. The man appeared to take an amazing leap into a Walter Mitty world. Suddenly eight inches placement of the ball for a free kick was important. The corner kick had to be taken from the opposite side from which all 22 players were prepared for it to be taken when the keeper tipped over the centre of his bar. Blatent barging in the back by whitstable was deemed to be diving by Bay. Then he took all 22 players off for an enforced water break, at a time in the match when Bay were pressing whitstable back into ragged and sometimes panicked defence - and booked Ben Brown when he pointed out that he had robbed Bay of an advantage.
The official correctly sent off Joe Evans for a reckless two footed lunge. He later sent off Darren Wells. Bay were attacking and the ref heard someone call him a name. No Bay player had any reason, at that moment, to make any remark to him as the play was going in Bay's favour. He selected Darren and that was that. Whitstable players were even telling the referee that he had the wrong person but he didn't contemplate that he had made a mistake.
Apart from the shocking refereeing Bay still looked as though a goal could come at any time but a combination of bad luck, poor finishing/passing and good goal keeping conspired to see Whitstable go home with all three points.

Editors note: an earlier version of this report used references to the referee which, with hindsight, were over the top. Herne Bay FC wish to apologise for any offence it may have caused by publishing the report as written.

Herne Bay 4 - 1 Ashford Town

Buised and tired, Bay youngsters went into Tonights match full confidence after their come back at the weekend against title rivals Canterbury City.
Bay completely dominated this game from the start, keeping the ball from Ashford for long periods of the first-half. They made their superiority pay after 15 minutes when Ben Brown opened the scoring. After going close with his head from a Joe Evans cross, the ball fell to Dan Smith who squared it back for Ben to slot home from inside the six yard box.
Bay continued to dominate and the inevitable second goal came within minutes, and what a goal it was. Rob Lawrence siezed on the ball after two Ashford defenders got in each other's way and curled the ball into the top right hand corner. H.T 2-0.
The second half saw much of the same with bay dominating, and with Rob Lawrence in particular running the ashford defence ragged. His second goal came after good running by Ben Brown.
Ashford managed only a few chances and made one of them count after a mix up in the Bay defence.
The visitors tried to get back into the match with some good passing and movement but were unable to create any clear cut chances. It was Bay who ended the game on a high with another great goal from Rob Lawrence to complete a wonderful hattrick.

Canterbury City 2 - 3 Herne Bay

Bay started the better and were unlucky not to go in front early on after Ben Brown put in a lovely cross which Christian Marsh was unable to convert into a goal.
Bay's second chance came from a free-kick taken by Robert Joyce but again no-one got on the end of it. Then the game changed and it became all Canterbury.
Shaun Smith became the much busier keeper making two outstanding saves to keep City at bay. Their break-through came when Bay lost the ball out wide and City broke quickly down the right. The ball was centred and Jay Turner scored.
Half-time came and Bay were forced to make a change. Injured Christian Marsh was replaced by Joe Evans.
Canterbury did start the better but Bay moved up a gear themselves. Canterbury extended their lead to 2-0, Aaron Campbell heading in from a long throw-in.
Then Bay stepped up 2 gears and within five minutes they were awarded a penalty. Rob Lawrence was brought down in the area and Ben Brown calmly put it away. From then on Bay totally dominated the game with Ben Brown, Dan Smith and Joe Evans grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck.
Joe Evans played Rob Lawrence through for him to put away for Bay's second. Then it was all about wanted to get the winner more. It was Bay and Ben Brown who completed a fine victory. FANTASTIC BOYS WELL DONE.

Herne Bay 4 - 2 Folkestone Invicta

Bay's youngsters still have five matches to play to end of the season and this one was as big as they get.
Folkestone, top of the table before todays game had, earlier this month, won 2-1 at their ground but Bay were in no mood for that to happen again.
With the return of Rob Lawrence from holiday Bay looked more lively than they have in recent weeks. They took control of the game from the start with their flowing passing game and it was no surprise when the breakthrough came.
Bay broke down the left where Rob Lawrence picked up the ball and charged into the box only to be up-ended for a penalty. Ben Brown stepped up and blasted Bay into the lead.
Folkestone did manage to play some football and got on level terms just after half an hour. However, the last 15 minutes saw Herne Bay totally dominating and plenty of chances were created, one of which fell to Christian Marsh to slot home.
The second half saw Bay get off to a quick start when Joe Evans played Ben Brown through for his second of the game and what an important time to get it.
Bay totally dominated the possession and it wasn't long before they went 4-1 up through Ben Greenstreet after some good attacking football down the right from Darren Wells and Joe Evans.
Folkestone again hit Bay on a break to make it 4-2 but it was all over by then.
A special mention goes to Ben Brown for his positive and supportive attitude to the team throughout the game. His non-stop running and determination and PASSION for Herne Bay was inspirational.
LETS GET BEHIND THE BOYS FOR NEXT WEEKS MATCH AWAY TO CANTERBURY CITY.

Margate 2 - 3 Herne Bay

Herne Bay used the same strong team that played on Thursday night but Margate, with the help of gusting wind, totally dominated the first half. Margate's long ball game had the Bay defence back peddling.
The break through came from a long ball down the middle which Bay didn't deal with. One Margate forward squared the ball for another forward to slide in.
Their second, which followed shortly, seemed to put Bay well and truely out of the game.
Changes were needed at half-time as Ross Brown and Matt Bubb were unable to come out for the second-half through injury. Robert Joyce and Jason Sheppard took to the field in their place and helped to change the pattern of play. Bay dominated the whole of the second half putting the Margate woodwork and goal line under emmense pressure.
Bay hit the woodwork three times and had two cleared of the line. Ben Brown's free kick the most notable of all Bay's close chances which crashed against the bar.
Soon enough though Bay's domination paid off when Joe Evans scored after Dan Smith's shot was saved but not held. Substitute Robert Joyce then stole the show, first with a free-kick which he curled into the bottom left corner to level the score at 2-2, then with a right foot shot into the top right hand corner after good work from Ben Greenstreet.
Bay ended up taking all 3 points. WELL DONE BOYS

Herne Bay 3 - 1 Lordswood

Bay rested a few players and had players coming back from injury. Christian Marsh and Ben Brown formed the centre of midfield and this seemed to work with Christian playing Ben in for the first goal with a low left foot drive. Bay kept the pressure on but were unable to create any more openings in the first half.
Second half saw Lordswood come back into the game putting the Bay defence under pressure and they were awarded several corners. It was from the third of these that Lordswood scored.
Bay then made three changes which altered the course of this game. With 15 minutes to go James Hunt broke down the left and crossed for Dan Smith to score Bay's second. Then with just 5 minutes left on the clock Neil Perkins smashed the ball in from the corner of the box to put the game out of reach for Lordswood.

John Ullman Memorial Cup 1/4 Final
Thursday 6th March 2008
Herne Bay 4 - 5 Maidstone United
(2-2 after extra time 2-3 on penaltys)

Bay were fielding 8 players who were playing their third game in 6 days, for the 1st team, Reserves and the under 18's . I suppose this is a problem which is a result of this years under eighteens being so successful.
Despite some tried legs the boys played with 100% committment and with the highest level of quality possible. These boys play with passion for their town and club which is something that has been instilled in them as soon as they join Herne Bay Youth. It has always been our ambitions for the boys to compete at the highest level.

Bay were forced to put Jason Sheppard, an outfield player, in goal as Shaun Smith was still ill, but Bay didn't let that bother them. They took the game to Maidstone with lovely passing and determined runs and kept Maidstone on the back foot for the first half an hour of the game. Unfortunately they struggled in front of goal.
Maidstone started to get to grips with the midfield and started to put pressure on the Bay defence and on the stroke of half-time got the break through to go in 1-0 up.

Bay came out for the second half in determined fashion and kept the Maidstone defence very busy. Changes were soon needed as tiredness in legs and bodies was beginning to show. Bay substituted two wingers and a forward to try and get back into game.
They kept pushing forward and had two goals disallowed, both netted by Neil Perkins. Only the referee knows why. What a shame.
Bay did get the rub of the green when they were awarded a penalty with ten minutes to go which Ben Brown calmly put into the top corner. The tempo was kept high and Bay had the ball in the net again just before full-time but this was also disallowed.

Extra-time saw Bay take the lead through James Hunt after a wonderful run from inside his own half and past the Maidstone goalkeeper.Maidstone got their equaliser in the last minutes of extra-time.
At the end of the game Bay had to pick 5 boys for the penaltys and to be honest it was the 5 boys that were still standing. Dan Smith choose to go in goal for the penaltys and he saved Maidstone first, Ben Brown missed Bay first and Maidstone scored the next three in between that Matt Bubb and Ritchie Martin scored but unfortuately Ben Greenstreet missed.

It was really good effort and no way did the boys deserve to lose this game. On a positive note Bay are still 4 points clear in the league and so need a good win on thursday against Dover.

Team: J.SHEPPARD; D.WELLS; S.KETTLE; R.JOYCE; M.BUBB; R.BROWN; N.PERKINS; D.SMITH; B.BROWN; B.GREENSTREET; R.LAWRENCE; J.MOREY; J.HUNT; R,MARTIN.

Sunday 24th February 2008
Faversham Town 0 - 1 Herne Bay

Bay managed to get through a hard fought match with all 3 points. Even though they had problems with illness, injuries and players away, Bay still managed to put out a very strong side and how they needed it.
The two teams contested a very hard fought match at Salters Lane. Bay put some lovely moves together which cut apart the Faversham defence but unfortunately Ben Brown, though through on goal a couple of times, was unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
It was looking like a goaless first-half until, in the dying minutes, Ben Brown broke through once more. His first shot was saved but he put away the rebound with a left foot finish.
The second half was much the same, a lot of hard work from both teams but no one was able to put the ball in the back of the net. The closest chance fell to Rob Lawrence who hit the post.
Credit must go to Faversham who were outstanding and do not deserve to be at the bottom of the league..

Herne Bay 5 - 0 Chatham Town

Bay looked to get back to winning ways, and did so at a canter. They got of to a perfect start, Ben Brown played Rob Lawrence through who calmly lobbed the keeper within 10 minutes.
Ben Brown himself got played in by Robert Joyce to get the second. The third saw a lovely passing move which ended with Ben Brown beating two Chatham defenders before laying it square for Rob Lawrence to get his second.
Bay continued to dominate and made chance after chance, but on the half hour a Ben Brown free-kick found Neil Perkins' head for a well deserved fourth.
Bay made changes at half-time, Joe Evans returning from suspension came on for Christian Marsh and Dan Smith made way for Ben Greenstreet.
Bay did take their foot off the gas in the second-half, but still made chances Ben Brown could have had one more and also Neil Perkins, this before Ben Greenstreet made it 5 from a Ritchie Martin corner.
Bay go into the semi-final next weekend full of confidence.

Kent County FA U18's Youth Cup 3rd Round
Sunday 27th January 2008
Canterbury City 2 - 1 Herne Bay

A lack of matches and poor refereeing saw Bay's 100% record in Cup competitions fall.

The first half was a tight afair which saw both teams create chances but neither was able to captise on them. The best chance falling to Ben Brown who unfortunately put it past the wrong side of the post.

The second half saw much of the same until the Darren Wells received his second yellow card and was sent off. Most observers were completely mystified as to the reason for it.

This changed the game, Canterbury took the lead on the hour and quickly made it 2-0. Bay changed things round and brought on Manpreet Hothi for his first game of the season after a double fracture of his leg in preseason.

Manny and Ben Brown began to try and put things back in Bay's favour. Good play from the pair set up Dan Smith to score what was the goal of the game.

After that the City defence stood firm. A special mention goes to Shaun Smith who kept Bay in with a chance. Watch out Jack Delo!

Thursday 29th November 2007
Herne Bay 3 - 1 Dartford

Another tough match for Bay. Dartford put Bay under lots of pressure in the first 25 minutes but were unable to score past Shaun Smith who made three good saves.
Bay's first attack of the half saw Joe Evans break down the right and cross for Jeff Morey who scored which was really against the run of play.
Dartford still put pressure on the Bay defence which stood up well to every attack. Bay started to play some football in the latter part of the first half and scored through a Robert Joyce volley.
The second half saw Bay playing some lovely football which had many of the spectators saying this was a very good footballing side, but it was Dartford who scored the next goal to make it 2-1.
Bay continued to go forward putting Dartford under lots of pressure and got a well desreved 3rd goal with a lovely strike by Joyce to finish Dartford off.

Plaaya Cup 3rd Round
Sunday 18th November 2007
Tunbridge Wells 4 - 5 Herne Bay

Herne Bay struggled to overcome a much better Tunbridge Wells team in the 3rd round of the plaaya cup.
Bay had a much depleted team, only went with 12 players. Tunbridge Wells took the lead after 5 minutes. Herne Bay hit straight back through Robert Joyce, but Tunbridge kept coming forward and went 2-1 up after a mix up in Bay defence.
Ben Greenstreet put Bay level.
Tunbridge then played some lovely football and totally out played Bay, which resulted in two goals which took the score to 4-2. Bay pulled one back before half-time through man of the match Joe Evans.
Bay came out for the second half and dominated, Bay had chance after chance, with 15 minutes left it was still 4-3. Rob Lawrence scored with 10 minutes left to make it 4-4, and then with 7 minutes only left on the clock Robert Joyce hit a left foot volley from 18 yards to put Bay in the quarter finals.

Chatham Town 2 - 7 Herne Bay

Bay had their first away match for a month, and to their credit came away with all 3 points. They had trouble at first getting to grips with the pitch but once they did they dominated the game.

Ben Greenstreet got the first after a lovely turn in the box he curled in with his left foot. Chatham responed straight away after a mix up in the Bay defence. Bay took the lead just before half-time through Rob Lawrence.

Bay came out in the second half in positive fashion, and started to create chances. Their third goal came from Christian Marsh after a late run into the boxto meet a corner which he headed unchallenge past the keeper. Chatham went straight up the other end and scored to bring it back to 3-2.

During the next 20 minutes Bay were unstoppable and scored 4 goals, the first from Ben Brown. He latched on to a through ball and calmly put it past the keeper. The next two goals saw Rob Lawrence get his hattrick. The first was a strike from the half way line which he volleyed straight over the keeper, the second was a lovely move with players going past Rob, he turned and put it in the top corner. The seventh saw Liam Gould score his first goal of the season after good work from Dan Smith.

Herne Bay 6 - 0 Ramsgate

As the score suggests it was one way traffic for most of the game, capped by ex- Ramsgate player Dan Smith  getting a well deserved hattrick.
The game started slowly but once Bay got the ball on the floor it was full steam head. Ben Brown broke clear of the Ramsgate defence and slid a lovely ball square for Dan Smith for his first.
Bay continued to dominate and when Rob Lawrence was brought down in the box, Ben Greenstreet stepped up and converted the penalty. Within five minutes Bay had killed the game, when Rob Lawrence lobbed the keeper to make it 3-0 at half-time.
Bay continued to dominate as they did in the first-half and when Ben Brown beat three members of the Ramsgate defence and slotted it past the keeper there was no way back for Ramsgate.
It was just a matter of how many would Bay score. Dan Smith got his second with a lovely header from a corner.
His third was set up again by Ben Brown, which Dan calmly put past the Ramsgate keeper.

Herne Bay 7 - 0 Tunbridge Wells

With two players returning from County matches Bay had a full squad to choose from this week and the two returnees each scored twice.
Bay totally dominated the whole game. Sam Kettle opened the scoring after Ben Brown's shot was saved by the keeper.
Bay soon went two up with Ben Brown this time putting the ball past the keeper.
Bay continued to put pressure on Tunbridge Wells defence and could have scored another couple goals. Five minutes before half-time Bay did get their third through Shaun Pullen.
Bay got even better in the second half and within ten minutes of the restart they had scored  two more, the first through Sam Kettle after a lovely through ball from Joe Evans, the second was the goal of the game. The passing and the movement from front and back players was awesome. Finally Sam Kettle repayed Joe Evans with a pass a cross the box  for him to slot past the keeper.
Left back James Beech then got in on the act with a shot from 25 yards which rifled into the bottom corner.

Battling with injuries and with Ben Brown and Sam Kettle on Kent County duty, Bay had to put out 9 fit players and 4 injuried ones to beat Faversham.
Faversham got of to a quick start and with Robert Joyce miss timing a challenge in the box, were rewarded a penalty which was calmly put away.
Bay battled back and striker Ben Greenstreet scored to level up the game, unfortunately he was injuried five minutes later. Second half saw Faversham take a 2-1 lead early on, which forced Bay into a tactical change. Within 20 seconds of coming on, substitute Rob Lawrence had scored.
Faversham took the lead for the third time after Bay lost the ball in midfield. But after that Bay got two very quick goals both by forward Jeff Morey which finally put the game beyond Faversham.

Herne Bay 4 - 0 Folkestone Invicta (Central)

Bay's first game under lights this season ended with a 4-0 win.
Bay had rested a few players and brought in some players just returning from injury plus new signing James Beech. This was probably Bay's best performance of the season so far.
Bay kept Folkestone on the back foot for all of the first half. Man of the match Darren Wells put in two lovely crosses for Bay's first two goals, one from Ben Greenstreet and other from Dan Smith.
Bay had the returning centre-midfielder Christian Marsh who, with Dan Smith, dominated the midfield for the whole of the first half.
Second half was much the same as the first. Bay dominated, but didn't make too many chances. Folkestone then had two break aways which ended with two one-on-ones which Shaun Smith saved well.

Herne Bay 5 - 0 Margate

Bay continued their winning ways despite resting a few players, as the boys have a very busy few weeks ahead with reserves and eighteens.
They got of to a poor start but managed not to concede. Bay soon got into the pace of the game and went ahead through Ben Greenstreet after good play from Joe Evans and Rob Lawrence. Bay continued to dominate especially with the influence of Ben Brown in the midfield and Ross Brown at the back.
